I see a ton of pepole that used a bad contractor to build thier deck
And guess what, yup they used screws or nails to secure the uprights....
Did you know that you should use lags or through bolts when securing a railing post. As per code you need to have a 200 lbs. rating on any deck railing. Meaning that if you were to lean 200 pounds against the deck railing it should hold.
I also see on most my inspection that a building inspector wont even look for these bolts. That's really bad, Just think if I missed one, and this railing did break. It would be a big problem for me the builder, the building inspector and of course who ever feel off.
Most main post for deck railing are a 4x4 with a section cut away about half way, this portion would go against the rim joist (main part of the deck) So if your joist is a single 2x ? it would be 1 1/2 wide, the half of the 4x4 would be 1 3/4 wide. So you would use a 1/2 galvanized lag with washer or through bolt with a washer and nut 4 inches long. This way you still 3/4 sicking out. Tighten these nice and snug, to where you see the wood it self starting to squeeze.
