TOPIC: Leak in 3 handle compression type faucet
#439
Leak in 3 handle compression type faucet 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago
I purchased a kit at LOWES to replace the three handles and seats and everything and still I have a steady warm near hot water leak in the faucet. I repeated this process several times even put pipe dope on the seats and everything seems to be tight even swapped out the spindles (whatever you call them) with another one yet still have the leak. What do I do at this point? Forgot to mention this is in the shower and the middle valve is the diverter the leak is coming from the spout.

Easy fix, your replacing the seals and only the seals. What you need to do is replace the metal seats inside the faucet. Again very easy, your going to need three new seats and a seat tool. The tool looks like a big L with a square end that fits right into the seat and then you just unscrew it out and install the new, that's it that easy.

No Dominick not easy been there done all that over 15 times I think. Bought a kit and seat wrench even one fo those screw extractors as I could not get the seat out once. Well twice. have replaced everything including the seats and fresh washers and still not getting a seal between the seat and spindle (I know that's not the right name for it)and still warm water leak or hot think the cold is fine so now it is steadily leaking and diverted it to the shower as I have a hand shower and placed it on the floor fo the tub and there it is, any thoughts?? Sorry was not clear before. The last time I placed a fresh seat in there and did not over tighten it and threaded the thing in and something aint jivin as it is still leakin did this successfully in the other shower but not this one!!! Help!!!

The only thing that comes to mind is that you may have the wrong seat or seal.

Hey I just remembered one I did a long time ago that drove me nuts, I mean nuts. What happened was that I replaced the screw that holds the seal in with one that had a bigger head on it, and it was hitting the seat instead of going in the center hole. Check that. Even try to switch out from one of the other ones and see what happens. I mean unless you have a crack somewhere, which I never seen..

YES, I know what you mean. I was referring to the screw it self. Check the size of the screw it self with the old one. Hopefully you will see a difference between the two.

Ok so let me undestand you I should be using a screw the same size as the old one even though I have new seats that should go with the new screw. (Ok sounds like we are talking about something else now wish it was that than fixin my damn faucet!

Yea, a lot of times the screws have a bigger head on it, which is great to hold the seal on, but it doesn't allow the head of the screw to fit inside the hole of the metal seat. Even just a little will hold it from making a good seal. I always try not to use the new screws because of this.
