square.jpgThe first thing you need to know before installing any new floor.

 

is, is this floor square. Square means are all four walls straight and the same distance apart to each other.

You will be very surprised to find that most are not. If your installing carpet chances are you wont even know if they are or not. But if you're like to most of us today installing VT, laminate floor, ceramic tile or even hard wood you really want to start on a straight line.

A line that is parallel to the wall you are starting next to. See image below.

Once you start just measure to the next wall from one end to the other and see if you get the same measurements or close do it. Don't forget that you trim will cover up some imperfections.

It's much easier to spend a few minutes now rather then remove and try again.
