Here is some thing I can really help you with. If you watched my videos you can tell I'm no actor. If you read my articles you can tell that I'm no great writer.

However, as a contractor, I can tell you how to hire one and what to look out for. I know this for many reasons. One of them is that  I hear and see all the horror stories.

Let's start with first impressions; hey it's your house and your money. I think it's OK to be judgmental when it comes to this.  OK, from the very beginning,

1. Where did you get his number? Was it on a flyer at the local deli, BE CAREFUL! Any so called contractor is hurting for money if you see one of these?

2. Did you get his number from the Yellow Pages; OK these ads are not cheap, meaning he probably has been around for awhile. Do you still have last years book lying around? If so check and see if he's in that one as well.

3. Check and see if his address is mentioned anywhere, I mean a real address not a P.O. Box. I mean if I was giving someone my money I want to know where to find him. And why would a contractor hide behind a P.O. Box.? I made you think didn't I? Open up the phone book and count how many use P.O. Box's, now that's scary.

OK, here is a very big one. Many people, including my always late for everything wife, disagrees with me. If you make an appointment with a contractor at 5:00pm then he should be there at 5:00pm not any sooner or later. 99% of the contract you will have with him is his word.

Oops here we go, so many disagree with me on this one but later thank me on setting them straight. OK, your potential contractor pulls up in your drive way. Big question, what is he driving?

1. Is he driving his wife's van? (Not good)

2. Is it a real junk truck that will break down and that's the excuses he's going to give you why he's not at your house? (Real bad)

3. Or did he pull up in his work truck / van (not so old) the one he just came from his other job with? This would be a good sign.

Now your not suppose to know what your talking about, that's why your hiring a contractor. But he should. Ask him some questions and follow his responses. You will know if it's gibberish or not. Ask him about his crew, does he have one? Is the job too big for him, how long will it take him.
