How to use a wood router

router.jpgLearn how to use wood router the right way. There are so many bits you can use each and everyone has it's own purpose. Some are for trimming, moulding or just to make nice fancy edges. Read below I'll show you the differences...

First thing to know is that there are also many different types of routers and horse power to choose from. And of course each one has it purposes and uses. one thing many get confused on is that a router is a router and trimmer is a trimmer. Two different tools two different uses.

router bits come in either 1/4 or 1/2 shanks. This mainly depends on the size of the bit you are using. Where trimmer bits come in either 1/8 or 1/4. Most trimmers are used for finer uses like trimming laminate. Trimmers usually spin faster then a larger router. In this video I explain how to use a larger router with a 1/2 shank bit.

window base
written by Dominick, November 25, 2008
Hi, if you're referring to the rounded edge on the front of your ledge board then you would use a 1/4 round bit. This bit would have a bearing at the end. This bearing rides along the wood with the cutting portion above it. Would then adjust your router base for the depth of your cut. Use some scrap first and play with it until you get the cut your looking for. I hope this is what you were looking for.. Please feel free to ask me again if not or if you need even more detail...

NewBee Trimming
written by Donald, November 25, 2008
Hi Dominick, I was wondering how did you control how far into the wood you needed to trim. I am planning on trimming my windown base boards but didn't quite know how to. I have a 1/4 Trimmer Router w/a 12 PC. Router Bit Set. I am looking for the basic design for a window base board. I love your instruction on the Router Use. Can you give some advise on how to make this cut on my window sill. Thanks.
