Over time, your boiler can get filled up with all kinds of gunk and debris from the chimney.  Scales from the boiler sections and/or just plain soot.  It's very important that this be cleared out, so the flame from the boiler can pass through the boiler sections.

Below you'll see just how much buildup you can get.  And to tell you the truth this one isn't the worst I've seen! This one only took me about 60 minutes to clean.
