A little back ground on me. I'm a general contractor and have been for over 25 years. I was once in the Better Homes and Garden magazine for a custom bathroom remodel back in 1998. As a general contractor I get into it all, from building a whole house, bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, plumbing, electrical, roofing just to name a few. So you can rest assure that I'm more then qualified to answer your do it your self questions.
Helping home owners out with their projects is something I enjoy very much. The emails I get thanking me for my help is what keeps me going. I just enjoy it so much. From home owners around the world to right around the corner. This is something I truly love doing. So please ask me what ever you need help with and you will get a real answer the same day. Asking me is like having your own builder in your pocket.
Also watch some of my DIY videos, read my DIY articles, even comment on them if you like.
Regards... Dominick A.

Here is a list of items that you should check..
If you have a
boiler heater (hot water) check and make sure the temperature settings
are
right. The high side should be no higher then 190 degrees and the low
should be around 175. This will save you a lot. What you don't want is
you heater coming on when the temperature is to low. This means your
heater will be on longer and working harder, so it's very important to
have these setting right and right for your house. Also make sue you
have your filters changed. Not just checked, but replaced.
Boiler settings There is something called "Delta T" what this means is when the hot water leaves your boiler it's as hot as the high side temperature setting of your boiler, say 190 degrees, it then runs the course threw your heaters getting colder and colder and then returning back to your boiler to run the whole course again. But when this colder water comes back it should not be less then 40 degrees warmer. The best way is to go out and buy one of those laser pointer temperature gauges...

Here is a video of how to change the oil filter on a oil fired heating system. You would also learn how to re-prime your system if you run out of oil. Not all systems look alike, but all have a similar filter system and ALL get primed the same way. The trick is to get all the air out. You can find these filters at any Home Depot , Lowes or plumbing supply. My self I like using the wool type oil filters. This type of filter cost about $7.

In this video I'll show you how you can build a free standing pergol. The first big tip is use the straightest best looking wood you can find. Also it would be best to let the wood stand out for a while to let it do what ever it may do, ie. warp, curl, split or what ever. With a pergola the wood is really just floating there. It's not really nailed in from all four corners that would hold it in place from warping or what ever. Thats another reason why I like using cedar. With cedar if it looks good now, it will look later.
