If you always remember this you will be fine. The R in the insulation factor stands for resistance to air flow. Any air flow of course is bad. So by installing insulation you are preventing the movement of air flow.

Lets start with the big 'R' and what it means. R stands for resistance to air flow.

Fiberglass, pink, yellow, white, all the same same.

R11 for 2x4 interior walls, like to sound proof a room.

R-13 again for 2x4 walls, but for exterior

R-19 You would use for 2x6 exterior walls.

Batt refers to either 8 or 4 foot sections, makes installing insulation much quicker and no need to cut.

The paper on the insulation is a vapor barrier, This paper ALWAYS faces the inside or the heated area.

You have to remember that any caps between the insulation and the framing will result in very poor insulation. Even if you have a ton of insulation one air cap will be bad. Sometimes you can have cap because you had something like a pipe or electrical box in the way and that's fine, but now you would rip a hand full of itchy insulation and stuff the hole or cap.
