Hi Dom just wanted to ask you, when running wire from the basement to my attached garage for a 240 volt outlet what wire size would be best? My breaker is a 40 amp federal and the garage would be around about 30 to 40 feet away from the main..

Please briefly explain why you feel this answer should be reported.
Being that it’s 220 and 40 amp I would install a small sub panel. However #10 or #8 wire would be what you want to use. #8 if longer than 40 feet.
