You have 2 black lines coming out of the box (on a three way switch) how do you know which one is the hot and which one is the traveler?

Always a great and hard to answer question. The best way is to look into the box at the wires. If the black wire is with a 2 / wire. Meaning with no red with it chances are that would be the wire to the light or is power coming in. Use a tester. If it’s with a red wire then that would be for the three way to three way switch. Which wire?, you’ll have to trace them to see which one.
