Hi Dominic,
I bought some deck mud and fat mud, along with lathe. I have bare 2×4 studs around my shower remodel, and I plan on (as a first timer too) putting some water resistant paper over the studs; place lath directly on the studs with screws nice and tight, and then using a hawk trowel etc. mudding the shower walls in place with the assistance of some straight edges and those thickness sticks.
My question is although you recommend the Wonder Board method, is there anything I am doing wrong by mudding directly over the bare studs/lathe versus putting in some sort of hard backing?
Sincerely,
Paul Romero

Really I would just use wounder board. Much easier and a better all around job.
