In this video, I show you how to install a 220-volt outlet using 4 “wire” The fourth wire is neutral (white wire). Most dryer wires will be a 10 gauge wire for 30 amps. However, the wire shown in the video was a #6 wire for a 40 – 50 amp.
Please watch my video on how to install a 220-volt outlet (20 amp) and my other article on just wiring a dryer.

I have a 3 plug 220 outlet in my utility room i need to change it to 4 plug outlet for my dryer what can I do for a return path wire. There is no way to run one from the panel to the utility room because of where it’s at.
Before going crazy see if your dryer can be wired for a three wire. If not you’ll have to run a whole new wire.
My question is about breakers. I notice all the 240v breakers in my box have only one switch and not two, for example my dryer and range. But according to your videos this will require a double pole breaker. What is the difference in these breakers?
Also, if you have a double pole 30amp breaker, does that mean it will allow 30amps for each hot leg?
Thank you.
for a 220 breaker you should have a two pole breaker. But the two poles are tied together as one. Send me a picture if you like using the contact Dominick on the bottom of this page. And yes a 30 amp breaker will only allow 30 amps across both legs as one breaker.
My builder installed 220V 30 amp 4 wire plug and breaker. I needed a 20 amp plug for my 5 hp 220V air compressor, so I’m changing it out, but the plug only has the two hots and the ground. Can I just connect the red and black and ground and install a cap on the white/common? Is it required to change the 30 amp breaker to 20 amps?
As long as you don’t need the neutral.
on a 220 volt. is the gray wire a neutral wire i have 1 black 1 red 1 gray and 1 clear wire
This would depend on the amperage. white-neutral black or red and black- hot and one ground. Ground could either be bare or green.
I’d like to have another range outlet outside wall of my kitchen. What is easy/simple way to do that? Can I add another electric range outlet from existing (range) outlet? If so, how? Thanks for your help.
Each 220 volt outlet has to be on it’s own circuit. Unlike 110 volts.
Hi Dominick,
I renovated and don’t use my stove outlet anymore. Can I use my stove 4 legs 220 volt for a garage heater which is a 3 legs plug?
Thanks,
Sure you can. But you may want to change the breaker to whatever your heater needs.
how would this apply for a hot tub, i am running 4 8 awg wire from a 50amp fuse to a sub panel then to the tub. i have the red and black off the fuse white common and green ground. My question is at the sub panel there is another 50amp do i put a red and black on both sides and then the other red black to the tub i match or do i match both red on 1 side and both black on the other. thanks
White is neutral, the return path for a 220. Black is hot and so is red. the two hots don’t have to match color but they both need to be hot from the two separate hot legs.
Hello
If you don’t have the space in the breaker box to add the 220v line, what do you do next and is this considered a big problem? I have a electric dryer to hook up but I need a 220v line and one electrician said that It was a problem. Help me please!!!!!!!!!!
That’s not a problem. Just move a few breakers to a sub panel. Watch my video on how to install a sub panel.
can i install a subpanel in the garage of a another subpanel i need 50 am ps to run a air compressor and lights and some electrical i have 3 8ft lights and 4 4 ft lights now there is only 120v going out to the garage from the subpanel now. i know i need a new sub panel in the garage how can i do this the main box is in a bedroom rated at 150 amps and the subpanel is in the florida room now it controls the electrical in the florida room and 120 to the garage. this subpanel in the florida room has room that i can add 4 more circuits. or do i need to upgrade the main panel to 200 amps and run the garage panel from the main panel in the house
You would really need to start adding up all circuits in order to know if a upgrade is even needed. I would just install a new sub panel from the main panel to the garage.
